It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of a remarkable soul, Canon Hilary Spurgeon. In the early hours of Friday morning, Hilary concluding a valiant battle against cancer that she fought with unwavering courage.
Hilary held a special place in the heart of our church family as a dedicated Reader at Havenstreet and Binstead. Her devotion was not confined to her local congregation; for countless years, she graced the Diocese of Portsmouth Readers' Board with her wisdom and warmth. Even in the face of challenges, Hilary remained steadfast as the Deputy Warden of Readers and the cherished treasurer of the Readers' Board, demonstrating her commitment until her death.
Her impact stretched even further. A Lay Canon Emeritus of Portsmouth cathedral, Hilary's influence reached the very heart of our spiritual home. Her service extended across the parish, deanery, and diocese, where she fulfilled crucial roles in governance.
The love and admiration she evoked are a testament to her extraordinary spirit. Hilary's memory will forever be intertwined with the essence of our church and the lives she touched.
